Orangeries had their beginnings in the 17th Century as a practical building in which to grow oranges. The Dutch aristocrats popularized them, and these buildings eventually became an attractive add on to a home. Because an orangery’s original purpose was to grow fruit and provide protection as well as ample sunlight, they are often predominantly glass on one side and protected by brick or wood on the other, creating an open, yet private, atmosphere. There are some popular styles of orangeries that many people enjoy.

One such popular style of orangery is an actual restaurant. This style has caught on all over the world because of the appealing design. Because one side of an orangery is predominantly glass, it provides a restaurant an ideal opportunity to overlook any type of landscape. Maybe it looks upon a waterfall or even a busy social center. The back of the restaurant may then be less lit, making a cozy, warm atmosphere for patrons. This style of restaurant accommodates both those who want good scenery while they dine and those who wish for a little more privacy.

Another style of orangery that appeals to many people is one that looks like a sun room and is an add-on to the home. Because it acts as a sun room rather than a place to nurture oranges, this type of orangery is constructed using more glass than usual. It combines some elements of conservatories, and the room that abuts the orangery receives light. This makes the room bright as well, creating a cheery atmosphere while you read or watch television. More glass is obviously needed to build one of these, so they are pricier than other styles, but they are quite chic.

Different styles not only apply to the design of the building, but to the type of glass installed in them as well. Many people like the double-glazed orangeries because they pretty much eliminate drafts and act as insulation. Some of the glass available is even intended for solar control. This kind of glass keeps in heat during the winter and repels the sun’s rays in the hot summer months. Solar treated glass is of course more costly, but down the road energy bills will be less, so it offsets the cost.

Popular styles of orangeries are attractive due to looks and purpose. Whether it is an actual restaurant that accommodates all sorts of diners or a home addition meant to let in some light, an orangery is an ideal place in which to let your hair down and enjoy yourself.
